Competition toughens for accounting roles
Competition has increased for accountants looking for jobs in 2017 as 115,000 individuals applied for roles in the sector last year, equating to 17 applications per job, according to research from CV-Library

Although job competition has increased, in 2016 there was a total of 6,771 jobs on offer, a 12% increase on 2015, with the top desired job titles being accountancy, accounts assistant, accountant, trainee accountant and administrator.
Job seekers average desired salary in the accounting sector was £34,541 despite the average salary offered by employers totalling £32,178. However, this is still a 3% increase on 2015.
Lee Biggins, founder and managing director of CV-Library, said: ‘It’s great to see the accounting industry’s job market so active, and it is hoped that this will continue well into the year ahead. That said, there is a clear disconnect between employer and employee expectations when it comes to salaries, and it’s important to know what you should be entitled to, given your skills and experience.
‘For candidates looking for work in the sector, it’s important to think about what you can do to stand out from the crowd, given that you’ll likely be up against seventeen or more people for the job.’
The top five most common skills individuals put on their CVs when applying for jobs in the accounting sector are: accountancy, communication, administration, customer service and financial.
Over three quarter (78%) of candidates are unwilling to relocate fir a job with the majority looking for jobs in London, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool and Glasgow.
Biggins said: ‘There are similar trends across the majority of accounting workers’ CVs, and while this is inevitable, given that roles in the industry require customer service and financial skills, it’s important that any job hunter thinks about what they can do to set themselves apart from the competition.
‘Whether that’s perfecting your interviewing skills, using a more creative format on your CV or taking the time to do a tailored cover letter.’
