HMRC halts direct flow of client data to agents

Released 19 April 2017

HRMC have announced that for security reasons they will no longer handle direct requests from agents for their clients’ pay, tax and employment history information, often in bulk. HMRC say many such requests are from agents pretending to be their clients or calling on behalf of clients who have not given the necessary permission.

HMRC say that in future they will continue to take requests for this confidential personal information on their helplines, but will now forward such requests directly to clients, who will then be able to forward it to their agent in order for the relevant claim to be made or tax return completed.

HMRC reminds agents that their clients can access their information quickly through the online service in their Personal Tax Account, once they have registered.
